IIC Academy Launches IBSC-Recognized S-8B Marine Geospatial Information Program

posted in development by admin

In mid-September 2025, IIC Academy officially launched its IBSC-recognized S-8B Marine Geospatial Information Program, marking another important milestone in advancing international marine geospatial education. The launch was celebrated with a virtual opening ceremony, bringing together students, instructors, and global partners.

A Global Student Cohort

The 2025 intake has drawn students from the Philippines, Australia, Hong Kong, and beyond, reflecting the growing global demand for expertise in marine geospatial information. These students bring diverse professional and cultural backgrounds and will now embark on a rigorous learning journey designed to prepare them for careers in marine cartography, geospatial data management, and digital navigation.

Program Structure & Training Approach

The program is delivered online through IIC Academy’s advanced virtual learning environment, ensuring students can access high-quality training from anywhere in the world. This blended learning model provides both:

• Core theoretical training in marine geospatial concepts and cartographic practices.

• Practical competencies in compiling safe, accurate nautical charts that meet international standards.

This structure ensures graduates are equipped with both knowledge and applied skills, ready to contribute directly to global navigation safety.

Continued International Support

A highlight of this intake is the continued support from the Australian Government, which has once again funded 17 students from the Philippines’ National Mapping and Resource Information Authority (NAMRIA) and NAVMETOC. This marks the second consecutive year of Australian investment in the S-8B program, reinforcing international collaboration and strengthening capacity across the Indo-Pacific region.

Meeting International Standards

All IIC Academy programs, including S-8B, are recognized by the FIG/IHO/ICA International Board on Standards of Competence (IBSC). This recognition ensures that graduates are trained to the highest international benchmarks, making them well prepared for careers in hydrographic offices, port authorities, defense agencies, and international organizations that rely on marine geospatial information.

Shaping the Future of Marine Geospatial Professionals

Marine geospatial expertise is essential for safe navigation, global trade, coastal resilience, and marine safety. By training the next generation of cartographers and geospatial specialists, IIC Academy continues to play a pivotal role in building international capacity to address these challenges.

A warm welcome to our new students and the next generation of marine geospatial professionals is ready to expand global horizons.
