Are you loving the Americas Cup Racing?
A great deal of preparation has been undertaken over a number of years to make these exciting races a reality. One part of this preparation was ensuring the safety of navigation for the AC36’s, support craft and the thousands of spectators that have been taking to the water (including myself).
As NZ’s National Authority for Hydrography, LINZ collaborated closely with Ports of Auckland to gather high accuracy data to enable the creation and release of 2 new navigational charts. These charts not only have the most up to date data, but both the paper chart and ENC feature greater numbers of depth soundings in order to enhance their usability. Other improvements include amendments and addition of new Aids to Navigation, and updating of official names, coastline information, magnetic variation, tidal information and minor wharves.
In order to achieve the release of the new charts in the tight timeline desired by LINZ, IIC Technologies were required to surge their capacity for the production of the Paper Charts and put in place extensive quality control.
The outcome of these combined efforts have meant the successful release of the updated data into the new charts ahead of the AC36 series, and improved safety of navigation for all users of Auckland’s Hauraki Gulf.
